Bushwalking and Baking

It's been a while since I've gotten out and about in the great outdoors. So when my brother mentioned heading out to the You Yangs for a walk this weekend, I decided to keep him company and go along. It has been over a year since I've been on a decent walk (this sounds terrible, but I just don't get that much walking in around the house).

The three of us headed out, and spent a little over 90 minutes doing a trail walk. Mum threw in the towel at halfway, and waited for brother and I to come back with the car after we were done.

And for once, I actually managed 10,000 steps in a day! Most days, I'm lucky to make 500.

I've also done a bit of baking this week, for the first time in ages.

In hospital, most days there would be fresh scones for either morning or afternoon tea. When I got home, I found I really missed having my scone with jam to look forward to, no matter what the other meals may be like. As far as baked goods go, scones are probably one of the least scary, so I decided to keep them as an occasional part of the plan.

I bought a few scones from the bakery for the ease of having nutrional info provided, while I brainstormed how to get an accurate count on homemade ones. Kneading, sprinkling with flour, even just touching dough, all make an accurate calorie count difficult. Then I had the brainwave to use our Magimix food processor. I could weigh all of the ingredients straight in, dump the dough out onto a baking tray, and just pat it together gently with gloves on to shape it, and I could weigh all the dough that got stuck to the food processor, gloves, knife, etc..

I also made ANZAC biscuits, which went down very well. For you non-Aussies (a.k.a, 99% of you), ANZACs are popular biscuits dating back to World War I (supposedly sent to soldiers by their wives) made with oats, flour, coconut, sugar, butter, and golden syrup.

Tomorrow is ANZAC day. I was considering going to a dawn service for the first time, but given my lack of outings in the past couple of years, it might be a bit full-on with all the people (tempting as it is to drink booze at dawn).

I would so love to come see you, I wish I had an overflowing bank account rather than one waiting and waiting on benefits that never seem to get approved by the government!! LOVE YOU xx

  6. Hey sweetie. Sorry I disappeared again for so long, I just came back to my blog and this was the first post I saw on my feed; and I am so so happy for you.
It's always amazing to hear any updates from you, and this was such a positive post; I still have a long way to go until I'm up to date on everything I missed whilst I was AWOL, but I'm so happy to hear you had such a great time on the walk.
    Take care huni xxx

  7. There is so much happy in this post. It made my heart lift on a bad day to see you both outdoors on a whim (I never tire of seeing the You Yangs) and baking scones. I might bake some now actually!
I only know about Anzac biscuits from a crossword years ago: I must have been about 14 and the clue was "an Australian oat biscuit (5)". I was clueless even after Google (I'd never heard of it) but they look good. I love that NBC bag.

    Love you <3 xxx

  8. I felt proud because I KNOW WHAT ANZAC COOKIES ARE! I've even made them before and they're well tasty! I found out fairly recently that my grandma's uncle was an ANZAC, fought in Gallipoli, he was lucky enough to survive, but many didn't :(

Glad you managed to get some baking done, I enjoy it because it's pretty therapeutic, but I can't at the moment, because of phobias, and I get sick of making stuff I 'can't' eat :( I'm hoping to move past all that some day. I did make some brownies the other week for a domestic violence service fundraiser the other day, which I'm proud of!

Yes! I remember your portal gun! I'm a massive portal fangirl, and I've been trying to get Francis into it (succeeded with fallout and borderlands, so not a bad start!) I played the first one years ago when I was at uni, then I bought portal 2 last year as a birthday present to myself... BEST GAME EVER! Better than the first! Love all the detail, and the expansion of the universe, and Cave Johnson is the best character in anything ever!

I used to wear a corset every day (pre ED) and I managed to reduce my natural waist from 26" to 24", I could lace lower though, I'd even started making my own, although I never finished one because I suck at actually finishing corsets, but yeah, still have a drawerful at home because I can't face throwing them out. Most of them don't fit any more, and the ones that do really hurt because I'm too bony. I also don't have much left to cinch, which sucks :( I keep them in the hope I'll gain the weight back and be able to wear them again. I wore one for Halloween this year though and enjoyed that, despite the discomfort. I was all 'I LOOK PHOTOSHOPPED!' Haha!

Gaming cafes sound cool, wish there was something like that here!

I go through Simpsons phases all the time. It's a lifelong obsession :)

I also think all the best people are autistic. I agree it has its challenges, but he's also the nicest one of the five of us (in my opinion!)

    Apologies for the essay, haha!

Glad you managed to get out, and do some walking. I also don't walk far these days (except when on protests) and kind of miss it. It looks beautiful there.

Also your skirt is very cool!

  9. I'm so glad you got out and got some fresh air and you were actually able to enjoy it. Also, I love love LOVE the Nightmare Before Christmas and that bag looks so cool. At first I thought it was a skirt from the picture, but then after reading Lolita's comment I looked at it again and realized it does look like a purse of some sort. Haha! Either way, it's very cool.
